Winchester, Kentucky, attorney and soldier. Winchester native. Son of Samuel Hanson and Matilda Hanson. Married to Caroline Wheeler Hanson. Graduate of the University of Louisville law school in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1851. Attorney in Winchester in 1860. Lieutenant colonel of the 20th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) from October 1, 1861 to December 29, 1863. Colonel of the 37th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) from December 29, 1863 to March 6, 1865. Wounded and captured at the battle of Saltville, Virginia, on October 2, 1864. Imprisoned at Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.
