Tennessee attorney and politician. Giles County, Tennessee, native. Married to Mary Ann Trimble in 1839. Taught school in Giles County. Attended Manual Labor Academy in 1831. Studied law at Pulaski. Admitted to the bar in 1834. Served in the 1st Tennessee Mounted Volunteer Regiment in the Seminole Wars in 1836. Member of the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee from Giles County from 1837 to 1839. Governor of the State of Tennessee from 1847 to 1849. United States Minister to Russia from 1850 to 1853. Member of the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee from Davidson County from 1855 to 1857. Member of the Military and Financial Board of the State of Tennessee in 1861.
