Kentucky soldier. Hart County, Kentucky, native. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1844. Assistant professor of geography, history and ethics at the United State Military Academy at West Point from 1845 to 1846. Lieutenant in General Worth’s Division during the Mexican-American War. Instructor of military tactics at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Inspector General of Kentucky under Governor Beriah Magoffin. Commissioned a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Prisoner of war at Fort Warren in Boston, Massachusetts, from February 1862 to August 1862. Exchanged at Richmond, Virginia. Promoted to major general and commanded Hardee's Corps of Bragg's Army. Promoted to lieutenant general and served as chief of staff for General Edmund Kirby Smith in the Western Theater from September 1864 to April 1865.
