Member of the House of Representatives of the United States from 1849 to 1855. Presidential elector for James Buchanan in 1856. Commonwealth's attorney for the 10th Judicial District of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1857 to 1862. Partner, with Henry J. Stanton, in the law firm of Stanton & Son in 1859. Owned one enslaved person in Mason County in 1860. Hired one additional enslaved person in Mason County in 1860. District attorney for Lewis County in 1861. Arrested for disloyalty by General Nelson in October 1861 and released from custody in December 1861. Partner, with Thomas J. Stroop, in the law firm of Stanton & Throop, from 1861 to 1865.
