Graduate of the University of Louisville in 1856. Student in Cumberland County in 1850. Household owned twenty-three enslaved persons in Cumberland County in 1850. Attorney in Cumberland County in 1860. Served in the 1st Regiment Kentucky Cavalry (U.S.A.) as captain in 1861. Served in the 5th Regiment Kentucky Cavalry as major from March 31, 1862, to September 5, 1862. Commonwealth's attorney for the Sixth Judicial District from 1864 to 1868.
