Hancock County, Kentucky, carpenter and miller. Tennessee native. Married to Rose Ann Davidson Shelley. Father of Mary B. Shelley, Annie T. Shelley, Clara Shelley, Carrie M. Shelley, Hattie Emma Shelley, Estelle Shelley, Geneva P. Shelley, and Hiram L. Shelley. Attended county schools in Gibson County, Tennessee. Carpenter in Hickman, Kentucky and Cannelton, Indiana. Moved to Hawesville, Kentucky, in 1852. Worked in the manufacturing of shingles and the distillery business starting from 1860 to 1866, when he opened a steam flouring-mill. Member of the Masonic Order at Hancock Lodge, No. 115 in Hawesville.
