Ohio, twenty-fifth governor. Youngstown, Ohio native. Son of George Tod and Sarah Isaacs Tod. Married to Maria Smith Tod. Attended Burton Academy in Geauga County, Ohio. Went on to study law, and in 1827 was licensed to practice. Served as a one-term member of the Ohio State Senate in 1838. Served as ambassador to Brazil from 1847 to 1851. Elected governor by a popular vote in the 1861 general election. Served as governor of Ohio from 1862 to 1863.
