Caldwell County, Kentucky, soldier. Caldwell County native. Son of Matthew Lyon and Elizabeth Maria Lyon. Ward of Frederick Henry Skinner. Married to Grace Lyon. Father of Hugh F. Lyon. Resident of Caldwell County in 1850. Attended the Masonic University in LaGrange, Kentucky, and Cumberland College at Princeton, Kentucky. Graduate of West Point in 1856. Owned ten enslaved persons in 1860. Served in the 2nd Artillery as a brevet 2nd lieutenant. Served in the 3rd Artillery as a second lieutenant until April 30, 1861. Resigned his commission to join the Confederate Army. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Regiment of Infantry (C.S.A.) as captain. Served in the 8th Kentucky Infantry (C.S.A.) as lieutenant colonel. Promoted to brigadier general in June 1864 and assumed command of the Department of Western Kentucky on October 27, 1864.
