Graduated from Union College in 1820. Pursued legal education in Goshen, New York, and New York City, New York. Admitted to the bar in 1823 and commenced practice in Auburn, New York, with Judge Elijah Miller. Member of the Senate of New York State from 1830 to 1834. Member of the Anti-Masonic Party. Governors of New York State from 1839 to 1843. Member of the Whig Party. Member of the Senate of the United States of America from 1849 to 1861. Member of the Republican Party after 1855. Unsuccessful candidate for president on the Republican Party ticket at the Chicago Convention in 1860.
