Served in Mexican-American War from 1847 to 1848. Worked on coastal survey office and as assistant to professor of engineering at West Point from 1855 to 1857. Worked on the construction of Fort Sumter in 1858. Commissioned as a full captain of engineers on July 1, 1860. Appointed brigadier general of U.S. Volunteers on October 23, 1861. Commanded the Department of North Carolina from July 1, 1862, to July 13, 1863. Breveted a major general of U.S. Volunteers on July 18, 1863. Commanded the Department of Ohio from December 12, 1863, to July 9, 1864.
