Delegate to the National Republican Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1856. Presidential elector for the State of Illinois to the Republican ticket of 1860. Delegate to the Peace Convention in Washington, D.C., on February 4th, 1861. Served in the 14th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a colonel, brigadier general, and major general from 1861 to 1866. Appointed by Abraham Lincoln to command the Department of Kentucky from February 1865.
