Washington, D. C., soldier and engineer. Clinton, Connecticut, native. Son of Edward Wright and Nancy Wright. Graduate of the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in 1841. Married to Louisa M. Bradford Wright on August 11, 1842. Father of Mary H. Wright, Edward B. Wright, and Rosa Wright. Assistant professor at U.S. Military Academy from 1842 to 1844. Member of the Army Corps of Engineers from 1841 to 1884. Served as second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain from 141 to 1855. Served as assistant to the chief engineer from 1855 to 1861 in Washington, D. C. Promoted to brigadier general of volunteers on September 14, 1861. Commander of the Department of the Ohio from 1862 to 1863. Appointed major general on May 12, 1864. Commander of U. S. Army Sixth Corps from 1864 to April 1865.
