Member of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1848. Member of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1849 to 1853. Owned twenty enslaved persons in Warren County in 1850. Member of the United States House of Representatives from 1853 to 1857. Owned twenty-eight enslaved persons in Warren County in 1860. Consul in Glasgow, Scotland, for the United States of America from 1862 to September 1864.
