Warren County, Kentucky, attorney, planter, and politician. Virginia native. Married to Lucy Craig Henry Underwood in 1831. Father of Frances "Fanny" Underwood, Juliet "Jupe" Underwood, Lucy "Lute" Underwood, Johanna "Josie" Underwood, Warner Underwood, Henry Underwood, John Underwood, and Mary Underwood. Graduated from the University of Virginia in 1829. Admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1830. Resident of Texas in 1833. Attorney general of the Eastern District of Texas in 1834. Member of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1848. Member of the Senate of the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1849 to 1853. Owned twenty enslaved persons in Warren County in 1850. Member of the United States House of Representatives from 1853 to 1857. Owned twenty-eight enslaved persons in Warren County in 1860. Consul in Glasgow, Scotland, for the United States of America from 1862 to September 1864.
