Twenty-third governor of the State of Mississippi. Tennessee native. Married to Permelia Wilson Pettus. Father of John Pettus, Mary Pettus, Allis Pettus, William Pettus, and Virginia Pettus. Married to Susan Hewell Pettus in 1861. Attorney in Scooba, Mississippi c1840. Served as Representative in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1844. Served as Senator in the Mississippi State Senate in 1848. Served as Governor of Mississippi in 1854. Elected as Governor of Mississippi in 1859. Re-Elected as Governor of Mississippi from 1861-1863. Refused to surrender after the Battle of Appomattox. Moved to Arkansas in 1867.
