Pennsylvania politician and secretary of war. Maytown, Pennsylvania, native. Orphaned in 1808. Apprentice printer under Andrew Kennedy. Journeyman in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Washington, Pennsylvania. Editor of the Bucks County Messenger in 1821. Editor of the Republican in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1824. State printer of Pennsylvania from 1825 to 1827. Adjutant general of Pennyslvania in 1826. Member of the Senate of the United States from 1845 to 1849 and 1859 to 1861. Secretary of War, appointed by President Abraham Lincoln, from March 1861 to January 1862. Resigned as Secretary of War, due to corruption allegations. Minister to Russia from January 1862 to November 1862. Returned to Pennsylvania.
