Harrison County, Kentucky, native. Son of William Allen Withers. Married to Martha Sharkey Withers in Mississippi in April 1850. Father of Ida Withers, Salley Withers, Alice H. Withers, Sharkey Withers, Martha Withers, Annie M. Withers, William T. Withers, Jennie Withers, Mary S. Withers, Edith Withers. Graduate of Bacon College in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, in 1846. Served in the 2nd Kentucky Regiment as sergeant and lieutenant in the Mexican-American War in 1846. Studied law under William R. Wall. Attorney in Cynthiana, Harrison County, to 1851. Attorney in Jackson, Mississippi, from 1851 to 1861. Organized the 1st Kentucky Brigade (C.S.A.) in Tennessee in 1861. Served in the Mississippi Light Artillery (C.S.A.) as colonel. Attorney in Jackson, Mississippi, to 1871.
