Graduated from the gymnasium at Golgau in Poland in 1848. Attended law lectures at the University of Prague in 1849. Immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1849. Studied law at the firm of Walker and Kilber from 1849 to 1851. Studied law at the firm of Dunn and Hendricks in Madison, Indiana, from 1851 to 1852. Admitted to the bar in 1852. Relocated to Louisville. Edited the German daily, Der Beobachter am Ohio, in Louisville from 1852 to 1853. Translated Uncle Tom's Cabin into German. Began legal practice in Louisville in 1853. Partnered with Martin Bijur, in Louisville, from 1856 to 1864. Delegate to the Republic Party National Convention in 1860.
