Attended Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Admitted to the bar in 1860. Served in the 12th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as lieutenant colonel. Member of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1863. Inspector general of Kentucky in 1865.
