Maine, soldier (U.S.A.). New Hampshire native. Married to Sophia N. Gay. Father of George Gay, Elmer Gay. Farmer in Salem, Franklin County, Maine, in 1850. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1855. Served as cadet, second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain, brevet major, and brevet lieutenant colonel in the United States Army (U.S.A.) from 1855 to 1871. Served as second lieutenant, first lieutenant, of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) from July 1, 1855, to May 14 1861. Served as captain of the 16th Infantry (U.S.A.) from May 14, 1861, to September 21, 1866.
