Madison County, Kentucky, attorney and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of Edmund R. McCreary and Sabrina McCreary. Graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, in 1857. Earned a law degree from Cumberland University in Tennessee in 1859. Attorney in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1860. Household owned eleven enslaved persons in Madison County in 1860. Served in the 11th Kentucky Cavalry (C.S.A.) as a major and lieutenant colonel from August 1862 to July 1863. Captured at the Battle of Buffington Island, Ohio. Prisoner of war in Cincinnati, Ohio; Fort Delaware, Delaware; and Morris Island, South Carolina. Released in August 1863 as part of a prisoner exchange. Served in the Confederate States Army from August 1863 to 1865.
