Oregon politician. Buncombe County, North Carolina, native. Resident of Henderson, Kentucky, in 1810. Resident of Vanderburg County, Indiana, in 1821. Elected to the House of Representatives of the State of Indiana in 1822. Member of the State Senate of Indiana from 1844 to 1846. Served in the Mexican-American War. Promoted to Brevet Brigadier General in 1847. Appointed by James K. Polk to be Governor of the Territory of Oregon from 1849 to 1850. Delegate of the Territory of Oregon to the United States Congress from June 21, 1851 to February 14, 1859. Unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for President in 1852. Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate from February 14, 1859 to March 3, 1861. Unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States on the Democratic ticket of John C. Breckinridge in 1860.
