Attended Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Read law with Judge Green Adams, in Barbourville, Kentucky, in 1855. Clerk of the Whitley Circuit Court from 1856 to 1862. Admitted to the bar in 1858. Relocated and practiced law in London from 1863 to 1867.
