Scott County, Kentucky, student and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of Remus Payne. Resident of Scott County in 1850. Resided in household that owned twenty-seven enslaved persons. Student at college in Scott County, in 1860. Private in the Second Kentucky Mounted Infantry (Confederate). Prisoner of war. Released in prisoner exchange in Spring 1865. Lieutenant in the 5th Kentucky Cavalry.
