Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. Army soldier. Jefferson County, Kentucky native. Son of Richard Clough Anderson and Sarah Marshall Anderson. Married to Eliza Bayard Clinch Anderson in 1845. Father of Robert Anderson, Eba Anderson, Maria Anderson, and Sophie Anderson. Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, in 1825. Entered service as a second lieutenant of artillery. Veteran of the Black Hawk War in 1832. Veteran of the Second Seminole War. Veteran of the Mexican-American War in 1847. Breveted major in the U.S. Army in September 1847. Commander of the island forts, including Fort Sumter, in Charleston, South Carolina, from December 1860 to April 1861. Surrendered Fort Sumter on April 13, 1861. Commissioned a brigadier general in the U.S. Army. Commander of the Department of Kentucky from May 1861 to October 1861. Retired from the U.S. Army in October 1863. Breveted major general in February 1865.
