Ninth Governor of the state of Wisconsin. Clarendon, New York native. Son of Shubael Lewis and Eleanor Robertson Lewis. Attended Clarkson Academy and Clinton Seminary in New York. Attorney in Columbus, Wisconsin in 1845. Married to Orlina Marion Lewis on July 23, 1846. Elected district attorney, county judge of probate, and member of the state constitutional convention of 1847 to 1848. Elected to the state general assembly in 1852. Elected to the state senate in 1853. Lieutenant governor in Wisconsin from 1854 to 1856. Secretary of state in Wisconsin from 1862 to 1864. Governor of Wisconsin from January 4, 1864 to January 1, 1866.
