Graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, in 1843. Veteran of the Mexican-American War. Graduated from the law department of Indiana University in 1850. Member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention 1849-50. Appointed judge of the 8th Judicial Circuit Court of Indiana in 1851. Captain in First Indiana Volunteers from June 20, 1846, to June 16 1847. Served in 9th Indiana Volunteer Infantry as captain from April 23, 1861, to August 27, 1861 and colonel from August 27, 1861 to September 3, 1861. Promoted to brigadier general on September 3, 1861. Promoted to major general on November 29, 1862. Served as commander of the 2nd Division of the 8th Army Corps in 1863. Resigned his commission on July 26, 1865.
