Twelfth President of the United States. Orange County, Virginia, native. Son of planter Richard and Mary Taylor. Married to Margaret Mackall Smith on June 21, 1810. Father of Ann Mackall Taylor, Sarah Knox Taylor, Octavia Pannill Taylor, Margaret Smith Taylor, Mary Elizabeth Taylor, and Richard Taylor. Commissioned a First Lieutenant in the 7th United States Infantry Regiment in 1808. Served in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War. Commander in the Mexican-American War, known for victory against Santa Anna at Buena Vista and Monterrey. Won the 1848 presidential election. Member of the Whig Party. Died on July 9, 1850 in Washington, D.C.
