Architect, civil engineer, and businessman in Cincinnati from 1854. Coal oil merchant in Cincinnati in 1860. Served in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as colonel in May 1861. Served in U.S. Army as brigadier general and major general from May 1861 to March 28, 1867.
