Madison County, Kentucky, distiller and soldier. Madison County native. Son of Lilas Portwood and Caroline Portwood. Married to Elizabeth Portwood. Father of Milton Portwood, George Portwood, Ambrose Portwood, Staunton Portwood and unnamed daughter. Farmer in Madison County in 1850. Distiller in Madison County in 1860. Served in the 7th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as private from August 16 to August 22, 1862. Served in the 11th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (C.S.A.) as private from September 10, 1862.
