Massachusetts, governor. Windham, Maine, native. Son of Jonathan Andrew and Nancy Green Pierce Andrew. Married to Eliza Jane Hersey Andrew in Hingham, Massachusetts, on December 25, 1848. Father of Charles Albion Andrew, John F. Andrew, Elizabeth Andrew, Edith Andrew, and Henry Andrew. Graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in August 1837. Admitted to the bar in Massachusetts in 1840. Attorney in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1840. Member of the Anti-Slavery Party of Massachusetts, by which he was elected to the state legislature. Member of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1859. Delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860. Governor of Massachusetts from January 6, 1861, to January 6, 1866.
