Connecticut soldier. Windham County, Connecticut native. Attended United States Military Academy in West Pont, New York. Served in the 1st Artillery Corps (U.S.A.) as 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant, and battalion quarter master from June 1, 1814, to June 1, 1821. Served in the 4th Artillery Corps as captain from June 1, 1821, to May 30, 1832. Served in the Army Ordnance as captain and major from May 30, 1832, to April 16, 1841. Appointed Superintendent of United States Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 16, 1841. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on December 31, 1854. Chief of ordnance from April 23, 1861, to September 15, 1863. Brevetted brigadier general on July 2, 1861, and major general on March 13, 1865.
