Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, attorney and politician. Nashville, Tennessee, native. Son of Edward Hyde East and Cecilia Buchanan East. Graduate of Washington Institute in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1850. Graduate of the Law School of Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1854. Elected member of the Tennessee State Legislature from Davidson County in 1859. Partner with George G. Bradford in Bradford & East Attorneys at Law in 1860. Appointed Secretary of State of Tennessee from 1862 to 1865. Governor of Tennessee (interregnum) from March 4, 1865, to April 5, 1865.
