Kentucky merchant and soldier. Frankfort, Kentucky, native. Son of Edmund H. Taylor and Louisa Hart Taylor. Married to Sarah Elizabeth Blanton in 1844. Father of Edmund Haynes Taylor. Married to Sarah A. Moreland in Mobile, Alabama, in 1864. Graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, in 1843. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Infantry Regiment as a first lieutenant in the Mexican-American War. Merchant in Franklin County, Kentucky, in 1850. Merchant in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1860. Commissioned lieutenant colonel in the Kentucky 1st Infantry Regiment (C.S.A.) on July 3, 1861. Promoted to colonel on October 14, 1861. Served as provost marshal in the vicinity of Orange Courthouse, Virginia, in March 1862. Promoted to brigadier general on November 4, 1862. Served as provost marshal in the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, on June 24, 1864. Assigned to Department of the Gulf in Mobile, Alabama, on September 16, 1864. Prisoner of war in May 1865.
