Attended the University of Virginia from 1836 to 1838. Graduate of the Medical College of South Carolina in 1840. Chemist in Giessen and Paris from 1841 to 1844. Established the Medical and Surgical Journal of South Carolina in 1846. Teacher and researcher by invitation in Turkey from 1846 to 1850. Chair of the Department of Science at the University of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1850 to 1852. Professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 1852-1854. Professor of chemistry at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1860. Chair of the Medical Department at the University of Louisville until 1866.
