New York, soldier and professor. Chautauqua County, New York, native. Son of James Schofield and Carolina McAllister Schofield. Married to Harriet Bartlett Schofield in June 1857. Father of John Rathbone Schofield, William Bartlett Schofield, and Mary Campbell Schofield. Graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Orange County, New York, in 1853. Served in the 1st Regiment of Artillery (U.S.A.) as a second lieutenant from 1853 to 1855. Assistant professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1855 to 1860. Professor of physics at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1860 to April 1861. Served in the 1st Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a major in 1861. Served in the United States Army as a major, brigadier general, major general, and lieutenant general from 1861 to 1895.
