Dawson, Texas soldier. Maryland native. Married to Carolina French. Father of Frank French, William French, Anna French, Frederick French, and Ross French. Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, on July 1, 1837. Served in the U.S. Army as a major in Dawson, Texas, in 1860. Served in the 2nd United States Artillery (U.S.A.) as major from October 26, 1861, to February 8, 1864. Served in the 4th United States Artillery (U.S.A.) as colonel from February 8, 1864, to July 2, 1877.
