Breckenridge County, Kentucky, soldier. Kentucky native. Son of David R. Murray and Anna M. Murray. Student in Breckenridge County, Kentucky in 1850. Student in Breckenridge County in 1860. Served in 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a major and colonel from November 26, 1861 to April 1864. Commanded the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Cavalry Corps, Army of the Cumberland (U.S.A.) from April 1864 to November 1864. Absent in Kentucky by order of Major General William T. Sherman from December 1864 to May 1865. Breveted a brigadier general on detached duty in 1865.
