Caldwell County, Kentucky, farmhand and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of William M. McCarty and Sally Mitchusson McCarty. Student in Caldwell County, Kentucky, in 1850. Farmhand in Princeton in 1860. Served in the 1st Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (C.S.A.) from November 3, 1861. Prisoner of war at Louisville, Kentucky; Camp Chase, Ohio; and Rock Island Barracks, Illinois, from from September 8, 1863, to February 15, 1865.
