Caldwell County, Kentucky, farmhand and soldier. Nashville, Tennessee, native. Son of Elizabeth Riley. Resident of Caldwell County, Kentucky, in 1850. Farmhand for W. Gresham in Princeton in 1860. Served in the 3rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry Regiment (C.S.A.) as private, hospital cook, and teamster from August 19, 1861, to April 1865. Captured at Spring Hill, Tennessee, on December 18, 1864. Prisoner of war in Louisville, Kentucky, and Camp Chase, Ohio, from January 28, 1865, to March 9, 1865. Paroled and furloughed at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, from March 9, 1865, to April 1865.
