Adair County, Kentucky, student and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of Henry B. Flowers. Attended school in Adair County, Kentucky, in 1850. Served in the 13th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a private, corporal, sergeant, first lieutenant, and assistant adjutant from December 31, 1861 to January 12, 1865. Wounded in battle in Tennessee in November 1863.
