Served in the 117th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as a major and lieutenant colonel from August 30, 1862 to August 1, 1863. Served in the 1st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery (U.S.A.) as a lieutenant colonel from August 1, 1863 to July 25, 1865.
