Washington, D.C., assistant surgeon general. Newport County, Rhode Island, native. Son of John Wood and Rebecca Wickham Wood. Married to Ann Taylor Wood at Fort Snelling, Michigan Territory, in 1829. Father of John Taylor Wood, Robert Crooke Wood, Sarah Knox Wood, and Nina Wood Grabow. Graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, New York County New York, in 1821. Physician in Utica, Oneida County, New York, from 1821-1825. Served in the Untied States Army as an assistant surgeon, surgeon (major), and assistant surgeon general (colonel) from 1825 through December 31, 1865. Stationed in the Michigan Territory, Florida, New York, Texas, Mexico, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Resident of Washington, D.C., in 1860. Employed James Polkitz, Elizabeth Polkitz, and Elizabeth Chase as servants in Washington, D.C., in 1860. Owned two enslaved persons in Washington, D.C in 1860. Served as the United States Army director of medical affairs in the Department of the West from June 14, 1862 to October 31, 1865. Subsequently brevetted to brigadier general.
