llinois soldier. Norwhich, Windsor County, Vermont, native. Son of Truman B. Ransom and Margaret W. Ransom. Graduated from Norwich University in Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont, in 1851. Engineer in Vandalia, Illinois, in 1861. Served in the 11th Illinois Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A) as a captain, major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel, from April 24, 1861 to November 29, 1862. Wounded at Battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh, Tennessee. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers on November 29, 1862. Commanded the XVII Corps of the Union Army. Died of disease in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia on October 29, 1864. Posthumously promoted to Brevet Major General of Volunteers.
