Served as a sergeant and first sergeant in the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry during the Mexican-American War from 1847-1848. Carpenter in Kalamazoo in 1850. Deputy U.S. Marshall in Kalamazoo before 1854. Elected Sheriff of Kalamazoo County in 1854. Carpenter in Kalamazoo in 1860. Served in the 25th Michigan Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as a lieutenant colonel from September 22, 1862 to June 24, 1865.
