Married to Margaret Singleton Stout in 1843. Father of Simpson Stout, Matilda Stout, Stanley S. Stout, Alexander M. Stout, and Emma W. Stout. Attorney in Daviess County, Kentucky, in 1850. Owned five enslaved persons in Daviess County in 1850. Attorney in Louisville in 1860. Household owned one enslaved person in Louisville in 1860. Employed Johanna Stapleton as a servant in Louisville in 1860. Served in the 17th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a lieutenant colonel and colonel from October 8, 1861 to January 23, 1865. Wounded at Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. Brevetted to Brigadier General of Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
