McLean County, Illinois, attorney, soldier, and government official. Washington D.C., native. Son of William Clark Orme and Jane Frances Ward Orme. Married to Nancy McCullough Dyson Orme in McLean County, Illinois, on October 27, 1853. Father of William McCullough Orme, Mary Bernadine Orme Smith, Lucy Orme Morgan, and Edwin D. Orme. Attended Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmetsburg, Frederick County, Maryland. Attorney in McLean County, Illinois, in 1860. Delegate to the Illinois State Constitutional Convention of 1862. Served in the Illinois 94th Volunteer Infantry (U.S.A.) as colonel from August 20, 1862 to November 29, 1862. Promoted to brigadier general of volunteers on November 29, 1862. Commanded a Brigade in the XVII Corps of the Union Army in 1863. Served as commander of Chicago and commandant of Camp Douglas. Resigned due to medical disability on April 26, 1864. Served as a supervising agent for the United States Treasury Department at Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee from circa May 1864 to November 1865.
