Served in the 6th Kentucky Cavalry (C.S.A) as a first lieutenant and adjutant from July 28, 1862 to June 12, 1865. Captured in Cheshire, Ohio, on July 20, 1863. Sent to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a prisoner of war on August 4, 1863. Prisoner of War in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, on January 1, 1864. Prisoner of war at Old Capitol Prison in Washington D.C., on July 16, 1864. Prisoner of war at Fort Delaware in Delaware, on July 23, 1864. Signed a loyalty oath to the U.S. government on June 12, 1865.
