Orange County, New York, soldier. New York native. Son of Sarah J. Benjamin. Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, Orange County, New York, from July 1, 1856 to May 6, 1861. Served in Battery "E" 2nd U.S. Artillery as a second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and captain from May 1861 to September 1865. Brevet major and assistant professor of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy from September 12, 1864 to August 5, 1865. Brevet lieutenant colonel at San Francisco, California, from September 1865 to April 1866.
