Served in Battery "E" 2nd U.S. Artillery as a second lieutenant, first lieutenant, and captain from May 1861 to September 1865. Brevet major and assistant professor of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy from September 12, 1864 to August 5, 1865. Brevet lieutenant colonel at San Francisco, California, from September 1865 to April 1866.
