Butler County, Kentucky, farm laborer and soldier. Tennessee native. Son of Sterling Powell and Araminta Powell. Married to Martha Belcher Powell in Logan County, Kentucky, on September 6, 1865. Resident of Smith County, Tennessee, in 1850. Farm laborer in Butler County, Kentucky, in 1860. Served in the 2nd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (C.S.A.) as a private from May 14, 1862, to September 21, 1863. Captured at the Battle of Buffington Island, Meigs County, Ohio, on July 19, 1863. Prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Marion County, Indiana, from July 23, 1863, to August 18, 1863. Prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, from August 22, 1863. Signed a loyalty oath to the U.S. government. Served in the 11th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as private and second sergeant from September 21, 1863
