Owen County, Kentucky, merchant, attorney and soldier. Kentucky native. Son of John B. English and Elizabeth English. Attended school in Owen County, Kentucky, in 1850. Household owned eighteen enslaved persons in Owen County in 1850. Merchant and attorney in Owen County in 1860. Household owned nine enslaved persons in Owen County in 1860. Served in the 11th Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment (U.S.A.) as a major from December 4, 1863, to July 14, 1865. Captured at the Battle of Sunshine Church, Jones County, Georgia, on July 30, 1864. Paroled on April 2, 1865.
